July Newsletter: Grand Opening!
It was so incredible to be back teaching again! I felt that it was an auspicious beginning, with our Grand Opening Day being greeted by a herd of goats.
The kids found a honeybee that couldn't fly and one offered up that he knew juice would help it. Not having any juice, they took sticks to drill into an orange one of them had in their backpack, then squeezed the juice. It promptly soaked into the soil so they put some on a leaf, then transferred the bee gently to it. When we checked back later the bee had flown off!
You really can't beat child-driven curriculum!
Community Events
I had a great time meeting community members and other organizations at the Healthy Village Festival in downtown Richmond. I gave out natural history bingo games. If you're interested in printing some out please let me know via my contact form and I'll email you one or some. There are ten different game boards!
School Enrollment
In California, formal education isn't compulsory until first grade, which means that anyone who wants their child to come to Outside School can do so in kindergarten, no problem! After that they'll need to be a part of another program, a "school of record." Or perhaps even an independent study program with a school district or with a state-certified tutor. No matter the situation I'm here to be part of a team for each individual child, to help them learn in a way that makes sense to them. Please forward this information to anyone you think may need this now or in the future. I'm here and looking for students for school!
I'm excited to announce that I've teamed up with Laurel Springs School (https://laurelsprings.com/). Now anyone who would like outdoor, natural education paired with an academically rigorous online homeschool can get just what they're looking for.
I had a really nice visit with Fusion Academy in Berkeley (with another being scheduled with their Walnut Creek Campus). They're a private, alternative in-person school. I'm hoping to set up something similar with them as I have with Laurel Springs, where children can attend my program and theirs as the "school of record" for children in first through twelfth grades.
And finally I am still a preferred vendor with Visions in Education. They're an online charter homeschool. Being a preferred vendor means that a child can be a part their free homeschool program and also receive some funds toward Outside School. This is for kindergarten through twelfth grades.
